Very new to Windows2000/SQL2000 Clustering, recently set up an Active/Passive
2 node SQL Cluster. Unfortunately one of the Collation settings needs to
change. After spending some time looking Microsoft site and other support
sites it seems that the easiest/quickest way to do this is detach the user
databases, rebuild the Master database and select new collation setings and
then reattach the user databases. In a non-clustered environment this seems
quite straightforward but not sure on a Cluster. Looking at M/Soft KB
298568 it states;
1.)Make sure that the SQL Server resources are being controlled by the node
in which you execute Rebuildm.exe.
2.)Bring the SQL Server virtual server offline by using the SQL Server
Service Manager.
I guess what it means from point 2 is that stop the SQL Service, however
doesn't this mean the the second node will then kick in? If so, should I not
be pausing or stopping the cluster service on Node 2? Also I guess that I
need to reinstall SP3 so the system databases are upgraded?
Appreciate any guidance that can be given here.
Many Thanks
Hello,
Here is the answer to your question
Qs. I guess what it means from point 2 is that stop the SQL Service, however
doesn't this mean the the second node will then kick in? If so, should I not
be pausing or stopping the cluster service on Node 2? Also I guess that I
need to reinstall SP3 so the system databases are upgraded?
Ans. You are correct, taking the SQL Server virtual server offline means stopping SQL Service. This does NOT mean that the second node will kick in. Also, you do not need to reinstall SP3 as by default rebuildm will
reinstall the SQL service packs by looking at the registry. But if you had installed any hotfixes or security patches after the service pack then those needs to be reapplied.

|||Thankyou very much for response. I have gone ahead and attempted this
tonight and when I run the RebuildM.exe I receive Fatal Error ' Language
dependent respurce file
C:/Source/SQL2000/X86/Binn/Resources/1033/Rebuildm.rll could not be found.
Slightly confused as I copied the entire contents of SQL2000 install CD to
the C/Source folder on Node1. The only thing I can see is that the folder is
called Res and not Resources, not sure if I rename this to Resources if it
will resolve or could cause other problems. Any Ideas would be great, cannot
find anything on the web regarding this.
Thanks

|||What CD did you copy the SQL setup files from? Is it SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition CD?
Do you have the following files:
Rebuildm.exe and sqlsui.dll in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\binn\ folder
Rebuildm.rll and Sqlsui.rll in C:Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\binn\resources\1033
If not, try copying them from the CD to these directories and then try the rebuildm.exe

|||Have you run rebuildm.exe from C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\80\Tools\binn\ folder or from C:/Source/SQL2000/X86/Binn folder?
You have to run rebuildm.exe from C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\80\Tools\binn\ folder and specify as Data source the
C:/Source/SQL2000/X86/Data folder
