Recently Rebuilt SQL2K Cluster

I have recently had to rebuild my SQL Server 2000 sp3a 2 node active/passive
cluster running on Windows 2000 AS SP4. We ran into issues about two weeks
ago after a SAN migration (I'll spare all the gory details). When my
previous cluster died, I used one of the nodes as a stand alone instance of
SQL Server (to run our production database). On the other former node, I
removed the OS clustering software and had to manually remove SQL Server. I
eventually (with the assistance of Donna L. at MS) was able to get a single
node cluster of SQL2K running on physical server PRODSQL01 (the virtual
server name is PRODSQLCL01). While the cluster was running as a single node
cluster, I applied sp3a and the 818 hotfix. I then migrated the data from
the stand alone instance to PRODSQLCL01 and started to use it for production.
I turned my attention to the other box and removed and reinstalled the
Windows 2000 cluster software. This box is now called PRODSQL02. I was able
to add PRODSQL02 to the windows cluster, and the successfully added it via
SQL Server setup to the virtual server. My issue now is that PRODSQL02 has
the RTM versions of the binaries. I am not sure if I have a setup issue or I
misunderstand point 3.10 of the sp3a readme. Currently the virtual server is
running on PRODSQL01. If I attempt follow the steps under "If you need to
rebuild a node in the failover cluster..." from PRODSQL02 I am only able to
select the Virtual Server, and if I continue setup I get this error "all
cluster disks available to this virtual server are owned by other node(s)"
and then "Setup was unable to verify the state of the server for an upgrade.
Verify the server is able to start and that you provided a valid sa password
and restart setup". I understand that the virtual resources are only
available on the currently active node, but the way I read the instructions I
should be able to run the service pack installation on the inactive node. Do
I need to rerun the SP (and hotfix) setup on SQL01 (since the virtual server
is running there)? Do I need to move the resources to SQL02 and run the SP
setup there? I just need clarification of where to run the SP setup since I
just added SQL02 to this cluster.
You should be able to run setup on the non-host node and it will upgrade the
local binaries. Try rebooting the newly added RTM node and see if it helps.

I've rebooted the newly added RTM node several times and it doesn't seem to
help. When I launch SP3 setup (via setup.bat in the local sql2ksp3
directory) on the newly added RTM node I get to the screen that says Computer
Name. Local Computer is grayed out, there is a box for the existing Virtual
Server name. When I type the virtual server name in the box and press next,
I get the error messages I mentioned in my original post. Is there anything
else you can recommend?

|||This is how I wound up fixing this:
I ran sp3a setup from PRODSQL01, which was the machine in control of the SQL
Virtual server at the time. It updated the binaries on PRODSQL02, but in
order to do so, the SQL Server service was stopped. Once sp3a setup
completed, I had to reboot PRODSQL02. When it was back up, I verified the
version of the sqlservr.exe file, and it was 8.00.760 (right click,
properties, version). Once I established that sp3a took on the newly added
node, I started the setup for the 8.00.818 security hotfix. SQL Server went
down briefly again, and then the binaries on the newly added box were
updated. I then installed MDAC 2.8 on this node and rebooted. Once
PRODSQL02 was running again I tested moving the cluster resources from 01 to
02. It succeeded. While SQL was running on 02 I ran throught setting up
Imceda SQL Lite Speed (again, it was on 01 but not 02). Once that completed,
I was able to verify that my normally scheduled transaction log backups
completed successfully. Both machines run SQL Server and perform the
backups correctly. I am not sure about the root cause of the issue I
encountered with not being able to run the sp and hotfix on the newly added
node when it wasn't running the Virtual SQL Server (the sp3a readme seems to
indicate that you can), but I finally have a 2 node active passive cluster
running again.

Server at any time. I was trying to say that each node is able to run SQL
Server, and each node is able to run the SQL Lite Speed backups. I had been
concerned that somehow I would get PRODSQL02 all patched but then failing
over would not work correctly. Everything is working OK.

|||The current correct term is "Single-Instance". "Active-Active" and its
cousins all refer to technology used specifically in SQL server 7.0 only.
Sometimes the binary only upgrade doesn't work right. Your solution is the
fallback solution but it does have the obvious downside of taking the SQL
server offline for a short time during the upgrade.

Is this possible to receive notifications from Notification Service in my windows application written in Framework 1.1? I am using SqlServer 2K.

RECEIVING messages from a Windows service

I've done a bit of work with the External Activator but I think it may be a bit overkill for what I need to do (which is RECEIVE messages from a single queue and process them with managed code). I've tried creating a Service Broker Interface service that retrieves messages from this queue, but I notice that if I set the timeout to -1 to watch for messages indefinitely, the Service never completes the OnStart code.

I notice if I change the service's timeout to something greater than 0, the message is retrieved, but this defeats the purpose of using a Windows Service app, which I want to continuously monitor the queue. I noticed the External Activator spawns a thread to start monitoring an EventNotification queue, which I can bypass since I want to monitor the notification's target queue.

Rushi, can you point me in the right direction to create a Windows Service that constantly monitors a queue? Also, I'd like the ability to monitor multiple databases (the queue name would be the same) as well, so if that is not feasible from a Windows Service please let me know.

Also, am I sacrificing scalability by NOT using the External Activator and switching to a Windows Service (I believe the External Activator will spawn multiple instances of the processing executable)?

If you do not need dynamic launching of one or more instances of your service program then you are fine with your approach of writing a single threaded process (which could be a Windows Service) that receives messages from the queue serially. (Of course, you could get fancy and have multiple (but a fixed number of) threads in your process simultaneously pulling messages from the queue). But if you need the ability to control the number of instances of your service program (processes or threads) based on rate of incoming messages, you will need to either implement the external activator based on the QUEUE_ACTIVATION event notification or use the sample.

If you choose the non-activation approach (i.e. your process is always running and waiting for messages), then setting WaitforTimeout to -1 seems appropriate to me. The Service class does not have an OnStart method, so I'm not sure what you are referring to. It does have a Run() method; and if you set WaitforTimeout to -1, Run will never return. While it would be nice to have a Cancel() method that would gracefully tear down the Service class, but since the Service Broker Interface is only a sample, we did not implement that. It should be fine to terminate the process while Run() has not returned. (The transaction will automatically be rolled back).

You will need to create a Thread in the constructor of your Windows Service class which is started by the OnStart() method. The ThreadStart should point to the ServiceBrokerInterface Service.Run() method.

What would be those graceful tear down steps ..If I want to implement one?. I can see the following...

If there are still pending messages read from the queue but not yet processed ...return such entries back to the queue by rolling back the transaction.

Implementation wise.... "cancel()" can set a flag and the Dispatch function does not dispatch messages if this flag is set ....this way messages that are already read from queue can be prevented from getting processed.

What else I am missing.?

Hello
I am running SQL Server 2000 with SP 4 on Windows Server 2003. Every hour I
receive several notifications with the following:
Reply: Message not found. Insertion strings:Error: 17805, Severity: 20,
State: 3 Invalid buffer received from client.
I want to create a SQL Profiler trace that will help me to identify which
sql statements \ stored procedures are causing this error. What will i need
to specify in the trace to identify the transaction that is causing this
error?
Please advise..

sql statements \ stored procedures are causing this error. What will i need
to specify in the trace to identify the transaction that is causing this
error and what kind of filter if any do i need to apply?

You should be able to track it down quickly if it's
happening every hour. You get capture exceptions using the
Errors and Warnings class. You can then see the spid that
generated this error. If you also capture the T-SQL
statements and stored procedures at the same time, you will
see what the spid that generated the exception was
executing.
What you filter on depends more on your system. You can at
least filter out the applications SQL Profiler and SQLAgent%

I am running SQL Server 2000 with SP 4 on Windows Server 2003. Every hour I
receive several notifications with the following:

I am trying to implement a DTS to copy data from one server to another

to do with the problem as each OLEDB server connection is
defined separately with the user to use for that
connection.

I've not got any open windows viewing this dir.
The data is on hard disk and not marked read only.

Rebuild Master Utility. The data files have been copied from CD-ROM and the Read-Only attribute has been removed. I still get the error. The work around posted as MS Knowledge Base Article 238678 RebuildM Cannot Find Original Master Database Files for
MSDE Installation does not work either. It suggests running msdex86 ... which isn't recognized. Any help would be much appreciated!

Rebuild index issue - - strange

Hi Folks,

SQL Server 2000 SP3 on Windows 2000. I have a database on which I ran
the command :

dbcc dbreindex ('tablename')
go

for all tables in the database. Then I compared the dbcc showcontig
with all_index output from before and after the reindex and on the
largest table in the database I found this. First output is prior to
reindex:

Following are my concerns:

The following numbers are all higher after reindex than before reindex:

pages scanned, extent switches, logical scan fragmentation, avg bytes
free per page, avg page density.

scan density is lower after reindex than before reindex

Seems to me that the numbers that are higher after reindex should be
lower and numbers that are lower after reindex should be higher? I
didn't specify the fill factor in the dbcc reindex command so it should
have used the default fill factor. The fill factor has never been
changed on this machine.

Am I missing something?

Reboot? How often?

We currently have SQL server EE running on Windows Server 2003 EE in a 2 node
active/passive cluster. We want to restart periodically but not too often.
What is the best way to do this? What I've been doing is move the resources
to the inactive side of the cluster then rebooting the passive node. Then
next time move them back using cluster administrator then rebooting the other
box. Anyone see any potential issues with this approach? Thanks.

|||Because the VP of our dept thinks servers need to be rebooted on a regular
schedule. Personally I see no real reason althought it's nice to test the
fail over periodically in a controlled manner. Personally however, I see no
compelling reason given the stability of Windows server these days. I just
looking for a best practices approach.

|||The only issue that I see with it is that you blow away your cache, so when
the SQL Server starts back up, it has to incrementally repopulate that as
queries come in. That leads to performance degradation and heavy
utilization on your disk drives. I see no reason to just arbitrarily reboot
a server, at all. If I have to apply a service pack or hotfix that requires
rebooting, then I obviously reboot. But, that is the only time that I
reboot a machine. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

stable than NT 4.0. Your VP needs to update his technical skills or at
least admit that Windows 95 is not the Gold Standard for operating systems
any more.

When there are hotfix that require to be applied I install them on the
passive node and reboot it immediately.
Then I download and install it on active node and I schedule a shutdown
(using shutdown.exe or psshutdown from sysinternals) for the following
night.
So, usually I shutdown the system monthly but only if there are high
priority hotfix available...

Reboot, how often?

We have noticed that we begin developing system stability issues with our
database client systems (everything is running on Windows 2K... SQL Server
is on a Win 2k Server system and the clients are running Win 2k Pro) after a
little over a month. A reboot of the server system seems to straighten out
this issue.
Has anyone encountered an article or information about a recommended reboot
time period for Windows 2000 Server systems running SQL Server?

Are you sure that your application(s) or user(s) aren't causing memory leaks
or spiraled CPU usage? Any hints in the event log that might correlate to

We have a windows 2000 server with SQL 7.0 in production, that is used quite
heavily throughout the day by many clients in both the US and Europe, and
the last time it was rebooted was when we changed data centers. I also run
several SQL Server 2000 systems that have never been rebooted for "stability
issues"...

Real time "live" data on a windows application .NET 2.0

I want to build a windows application in Visual Studio 2005 that grabs some data from a SQL DB and displays it in a gridview. That is easy and I already have it done, but I also want to know how to show this data in real-time. For example: right now we have a application that pulls some login information for all the users and displays their phone extension, their name, and their status. They can change their status by clicking on some radios below the datagrid and on change it updates the data and then posts back. However, I dont know how the guy who did it made it so that these local changes are automatically shown on everyone elses computers around the office. In other words, they are shown the live data as it changes, without having to refresh it or anything. How would I go about doing this or does anyone have any places/resources that could help me accomplish this task. Thanks.

Oh and the guy who wrote this is no longer working here and he deleted the source code so i cant look at it.

Here's the answer I got from one of our Dev:

there are two methods, a push method or a pull method: you could use something like NotificationServices (I haven't used this. There's some data on it athttp://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms170722(en-US,SQL.90).aspx) to tell you that the data has changed, or you could poll at intervals (or during lulls in processing time) for changes in data.

Either way you go, you're going to face problems of collisions if the users can change the same data. What would you do if you're in the middle of editing a row, and another user deletes it, and you poll for data?

thanks for the reply. the application is designed to only allow the user to change their own data, therefore there will be no way that any user can be changing the same data. I will take a look at that article.

Real problem installing SQL Server express 2005

When I first installed MS SQL Server 2005 Express Editon, I didn't I selected Windows Auth instead of mixed mode, so I uninstalled sql server and then attempted to reinstall. On the earlier installtion I did setup to instances which show in the "Control Panel/admin tool/services". Anyway, I used the unistall through the control panel, but on installing again it told me that I had instances aready running and needed to stop them. Couldn't work out how to do that. So after many different things, including using the MS's removal tool and windows installer clean up, I still failed. Now however I get the following error message:

Setup failed because Service MSSQL$SQLExpress is disabled for the current hardware profile. Services must be set with the current Hardware Profile logon property profile enabled. For more information on how to enable the hardware profile logon property refer to the product documentation.

Can someone help?

It sounds like the uninstall was unsucessful leaving something behind on the machine. You might want to try the following article to clean up the machine first and then reinstall.
